The winner of The Furious Gazelle’s first ever Valentine’s/President’s Day contest goes to Susan Emshwiller, for her story “Dining Alone on Valentine’s Day.” If you haven’t read her story yet, you should do that now.

This short story by Susan Emshwiller is the third finalist in our Valentine’s/President’s Day contest.
Susan Emshwiller wears several hats, sometimes many at the same time, a column of them teetering on her head. Filmmaker, playwright, screenwriter, director, novelist, actress, set decorator, chicken wrangler, painter, poet… She has written and directed several plays including the critically acclaimed and award-winning BRUSHSTROKES. As an actress she was featured in Robert Altman’s The Player. She is co-writer of the Academy Award winning film Pollock. Her feature film In the Land of Milk and Money, a wild social satire, garnered awards and rave reviews at festivals in the US and internationally. She likes inventing stories and back yard contraptions.
Our second finalist in the Furious Gazelle’s President’s/Valentine’s Day contest is a poem by Jari Thymian.
Jari Thymian is a full-time volunteer in state and national parks around the US. Her poetry has appeared in various print and online publications including Orange Room Review, FRiGG, Prune Juice Journal, Simply Haiku, and The Pedestal. She’s been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and for Best of the Web.
We’re pleased to announce our first finalist for our President’s/Valentine’s Day contest, in which Jacob Shelton envisions what would happen if James Garfield and Chester A. Arthur hit it off.
Our contest’s winner will be announced next Friday.

Thank you for all of your submissions to our President’s/Valentine’s Day-themed contest. George Washington would be proud if he could see your work.
We’ve been busy reading all of your entries and are glad to announce that we will be publishing three finalists this week, starting with Jacob Shelton’s “James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur.”

In honor of February we at The Furious Gazelle are having our first ever contest! Send us your Valentine’s Day and/or President’s Day themed fiction, poetry, art, etc. If you want to go crazy, we will consider submissions relating to any holiday occurring in February (Leap Day William, anyone?). Deadline for submissions is February 28.
First prize is a book of our choosing, mailed to you anywhere within the United States (sorry, rest of the world). We promise it will be exciting, eclectic, and an all around good read. The winning piece will also be published on thefuriousgazelle.com.
We can’t wait to see what you guys do! Send your submissions to thefuriousgazelle@gmail.com with CONTEST somewhere in the subject line. We will take your fiction, essays, poetry, art, et cetera. Interpret the theme however loosely or literally you wish. We are hoping to get at least one story in which George Washington’s heart is torn out of his chest as part of his quest to find true love & found the United States.
Once again, submissions must be in before February 28. Winning entry will be published in March.

This was January’s event, an evening with Tin House. We creepily snapped some photos, drank some drinks, and moved on. We also got a chance to meet with the authors after the readings, so there’s that. Overall an amazing evening.
The next event is February 11th with Cathy Chung, Chang-rae Lee, and Mona Awad, you should probably go if you’re in NYC .

W. Jack Savage is a retired broadcaster, educator and actor. He is the author of six books: three novels, two short story collections and the autobiographical The High Sky of Winter’s Shadows (wjacksavage.com) In addition to his writing, nearly eighty of Jack’s drawings and paintings have been published world-wide. Jack and his wife Kathy live in Monrovia, California.
